Senior Nursing Students work with Esther, a patient with COPD, who is anxious about her friend with COPD who has just been placed on Ventilator Assisted Breathing, and also anxious about her own future with worsening COPD. This simulation demonstrates a high level of skill of senior students addressing Esther’s fears and anxiety.

Improvisational Actor, Kendra Laughery reports her immediate responses to the two Senior students’ attempt to calm her fears. This interview demonstrates the significance of getting direct feedback from the live actor on the students’ impact on her responses and feelings.

Faculty Dr. Stephanie Sideras and Guest, Dr. Patricia Benner engage in this consciousness-raising de-briefing about difficult conversations with patients. Students are candid and insightful about meeting the patient where she is, rather than focusing on their pre-planning instead of the patient’s current concerns. Students and Faculty discuss the risk and artfulness of naming the students’ and patient’s silence and fears.
